👉 This course currently includes theoretical content only.
📅 Registration for face-to-face practical classes will be available soon. Stay tuned!
1. Course Overview
This course introduces you to the practical use of sports technology tools such as VALD ForceDecks and HumanTrak to assess key biomechanical and performance metrics.
You’ll learn how to collect, interpret, and apply data related to power, balance, and movement asymmetries—all within a structured clinical reasoning framework.
The focus is on using objective data to guide training load decisions, identify compensations, and tailor rehab programs.
2. Learning Objectives
By the end of the theory session, you will be able to:
- Describe the role of sports technology in clinical and performance settings.
- Understand key testing protocols for jump, balance, and movement screens.
- Identify clinically relevant metrics (e.g., peak power, rate of force development, asymmetry scores).
- Interpret performance data and apply findings to assessment or rehab planning.
- Use the K-Theorem to link objective data with meaningful treatment decisions.
3. Core Theoretical Concepts
A. What Is Sports Tech for Performance?
- Technology provides objective data on a client’s performance—beyond visual observation.
- Common tools:
- ForceDecks: Measures ground reaction force, power, and asymmetry.
- HumanTrak: Captures 3D movement data—useful for posture, balance, and coordination.
B. Why Use Technology?
- Detect movement inefficiencies before they lead to injury.
- Quantify rehab progress and return-to-sport readiness.
- Monitor fatigue, training load, and recovery responses.
4. Key Testing Metrics and What They Mean
| Metric | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Peak Force / Peak Power | Indicates explosive strength or capacity—especially relevant in jump testing. |
| Rate of Force Development (RFD) | Measures how quickly an athlete can generate force—critical in high-speed tasks. |
| Eccentric vs Concentric Phases | Helps detect timing issues, control deficits, or energy leaks. |
| Asymmetry Index | Highlights side-to-side differences—often unseen by eye. |
| Balance (Sway, CoM path) | Reflects postural control and neuromuscular readiness. |
5. Example Protocols
A. ForceDecks
- Double-leg CMJ: Peak power, RFD, asymmetry.
- Single-leg drop jump: Stability, reactive strength index (RSI).
- Isometric mid-thigh pull: Maximal strength.
B. HumanTrak
- Overhead squat: Tracks knee valgus, hip shift, trunk control.
- Y-Balance / Star Excursion Test: Dynamic balance and lower limb stability.
- Landing Analysis: Identifies control and timing faults under load.
6. Interpretation and Clinical Reasoning
- Use technology to triage priorities: What’s weak, unstable, or overloaded?
- Always pair data with clinical assessment (subjective + manual testing).
- Avoid over-relying on numbers—look for trends over time and context-specific application.
💡 Example: A footballer shows a 15% power asymmetry on jump test. Combine this with ROM testing and subjective history before planning unilateral rehab loading.
7. Communicating With Clients
“These tests show us how your body performs under load. By looking at your power, symmetry, and movement patterns, we can personalise your rehab and training so you improve faster and stay injury-free.”
Show clients how test results link to:
- Reduced injury risk
- Faster rehab
- Better performance
8. Therapist Philosophy
- Technology doesn’t replace clinical skill—it enhances it.
- Objectivity builds client trust, especially for return-to-sport decisions.
- Use data to support conversations, set goals, and justify progressions.
9. Clinical Scenarios and K-Theorem Connection
| Scenario | Application | K-Theorem Pillar |
|---|---|---|
| ACL rehab athlete post-phase 2 | Use ForceDecks to assess single-leg power + asymmetry before hop testing | Performance Pyramid |
| Dancer with knee overload | Use HumanTrak to evaluate trunk/pelvic control during lunge and squat tasks | Performance Pyramid |
| Desk worker with balance deficits | Perform static and dynamic balance tests to guide lower limb proprioceptive work | Performance Pyramid |
10. Case Reflection Prompt
- “What did the data reveal that your eye didn’t see?”
- “How can you use technology to reinforce your clinical plan—not replace it?”
✅ You’ve completed the theoretical section.
