Soft Tissue Therapy for Sport – Level 1
Theoretical Content (1 Hour)
K-Theorem Pillar: Performance Pyramid
👉 This course currently includes theoretical content only.
📅 Registration for face-to-face practical classes is part of this course.
1. Course Overview
This course introduces you to foundational soft tissue therapy skills used with athletes and active populations.
It focuses on clinical touch, patient communication, and structured assessment through the Elite Akademy 3-Depth Model. You’ll develop confidence in using palpation to classify tissue tone and apply effective treatment sequences that deliver results.
2. Learning Objectives
By the end of the theory session, you will be able to:
- Describe the clinical reasoning behind soft tissue therapy.
- Understand how to classify muscle tone using palpation.
- Apply the 3-depth model to guide assessment and treatment.
- Communicate effectively to enhance client trust and treatment outcomes.
- Integrate hygiene, consent, and ergonomics into every session.
3. Core Theoretical Concepts
A. Elite Akademy 3-Depth Model
- Superficial Phase (1 min): Light touch to prepare tissue and calm the nervous system.
- Intermediate Phase (30 sec): Moderate pressure to assess tone (soft, moderate, firm).
- Deepest Phase (15 sec): Purposeful pressure to create physiological change. Target: 8–8.5/10 discomfort without triggering bracing.
B. Therapist Philosophy
- Clinical reasoning = observing + palpating + adapting in real time.
- Therapeutic touch builds trust; language and tone matter.
- Closing your eyes enhances tactile feedback and reduces distractions.
C. Pressure and Pain Thresholds
- Targeting 8–8.5/10 ensures optimal tissue response without defensive bracing.
- Verbal check-ins and body language guide treatment depth.
- Physiological change requires discomfort, not pain.
4. Clinical Integration and Reasoning
A. Subjective Interview
Gather key information:
- Where, how long, what movements aggravate, past injuries, desired outcomes.
B. Consent and Explanation
Sample wording:
“I’ll be checking the area you mentioned and using light to firm pressure. Let me know if you’d like anything changed.”
C. Objective Grading Scale
Use a 0–10 system to:
- Quantify tightness and tone.
- Guide your treatment choices.
- Document improvements (e.g., “8/10 stiffness reduced to 4/10”).
5. Technique-Specific Clinical Knowledge
- Hand Technique: Soft but stable. Avoid finger strain; use body weight and breath.
- Table Setup & Draping: Comfort, privacy, and hygiene prioritised.
- Oil Use: Light layer for glide, removed gently post-treatment.
6. Clinical Communication
- Reassure and engage: “How’s that pressure?”
- Maintain contact: A hand on the back reduces anxiety.
- Stay objective: “This spot feels firmer than the other side.”
7. Clinical Scenarios and K-Theorem Connection
| Scenario | Application | K-Theorem Pillar |
|---|---|---|
| Desk worker with upper trap tightness | Use superficial + intermediate depth work; grade tone and reassess | Performance Pyramid |
| Weekend runner with calf overload | Use deep tissue therapy to target tone and proprioception | Performance Pyramid |
| Young athlete post-competition | Combine tone grading with recovery planning | Performance Pyramid + Movement Matrix |
8. Case Reflection Prompt
- “What was one thing that surprised you when palpating tissue tone?”
- “How might you explain this technique to a client in simple terms?”
✅ You’ve completed the theoretical section.
