Advanced Soft Tissue and Manual Therapy in Sport – Level 2
Theoretical Content (1 Hour)
K-Theorem Pillar: Performance Pyramid, Movement Matrix
👉 This course currently includes theoretical content only.
📅 Registration for face-to-face practical classes will be available soon. Stay tuned!
1. Course Overview
This course builds on foundational soft tissue skills by introducing advanced assessment and treatment strategies for athletes and complex client presentations.
You’ll refine your ability to:
- Interpret tissue tone
- Adapt pressure and sequencing in real time
- Work in high-pressure environments such as sport and sideline settings
💡 Advanced therapists don’t just treat tight muscles — they restore movement systems with intention and feel.
2. Learning Objectives
By the end of this theory session, you will be able to:
- Apply the 3-Depth Model dynamically based on real-time feedback
- Identify and treat complex tissue presentations using layered assessment
- Adapt treatment techniques to sporting and high-demand contexts
- Integrate soft tissue therapy with movement-based rehab and clinical goals
- Use fascia and tendon-focused strategies to enhance performance and recovery
3. Core Theoretical Concepts
A. Dynamic Use of the 3-Depth Model
- Adjust phase duration and pressure based on:
- Tissue density
- Symptom response
- Segmental guarding
- Combine with movement (e.g., PNF stretches, guided breathing) to increase effectiveness
B. Tissue Differentiation and Layering
- Distinguish:
- Myofascial vs contractile tension
- Intramuscular vs intermuscular stiffness
- Neural vs mechanical restriction
- Treat accordingly, combining release with functional testing and reassessment
4. Clinical Integration and Decision-Making
- Use subjective history to identify key drivers (e.g., fatigue, overload, instability)
- Palpate and confirm tone, stiffness, and guarding in relevant muscle groups
- Choose treatment pressure, angle, and sequencing based on:
- Functional limitations
- Neural sensitivity
- Sporting demands
5. Communication and Athlete Engagement
“This technique is designed to reduce protective tone and restore your movement control, especially in high-load positions like sprinting or cutting.”
Educate athletes and clients on:
- What to expect (temporary soreness, lightness)
- How changes will transfer to performance or recovery
- Why specific regions are being treated
6. Treatment Sequencing and Contextual Application
| Context | Treatment Focus |
|---|---|
| Pre-performance | Reduce excessive tone, enhance proprioception, stimulate readiness |
| Post-performance | Aid recovery, flush metabolites, reduce DOMS, address asymmetry |
| Rehab phase | Reduce compensatory tone, improve glide, integrate with control retraining |
| Sideline / clothing-on | Modified depth, faster sequencing, precise without full setup |
7. Key Advanced Concepts and Applications
- Advanced tissue assessment: distinguish superficial vs deep binding
- Cervical spine/headache work: suboccipitals, C1–C2, scalp tension
- Sensitive region treatment: adductors, subscapularis, deep hip (with care)
- Fascia & tendon release: joint lines (knee, shoulder, ankle), tendons (Achilles, patellar)
- Cross-fibre techniques: restore tendon glide, reduce chronic tightness
- Through-clothing work: adapted strokes for field/sensitive settings
Common targets:
- ITB tightness
- Upper cervical restriction
- Calf overload
- Shoulder stiffness/overhead impingement
8. Clinical Scenarios and K-Theorem Connection
| Scenario | Application | K-Theorem Pillar |
|---|---|---|
| Elite sprinter with hamstring overload | Dynamic depth variation + hip flexor mobility drills | Performance Pyramid |
| Swimmer in taper week | Superficial + intermediate pressure to calm neural tone | Performance Pyramid + Mind |
| Thrower with chronic shoulder tightness | Treat posterior cuff + traps; reassess IR & scapular rhythm | Performance Pyramid + Movement Matrix |
| Field hockey player pre-match | Through-clothing posterior chain release + glute activation | Movement Matrix |
9. Case Reflection Prompt
- “How did your treatment sequence change when you re-tested movement?”
✅ You’ve completed the theoretical section.
